Waking up everyday in Kefalonia Greece

When we moved to Kefalonia in Greece, it was our intention to buy a property which could be converted into 2 properties or buy a villa and a smaller property. We ended up choosing the second option. This was mainly due to us having a very noisy dog who can also be very unfriendly. Therefore Richmond Villa is our property which we rent out and then our second property which is in Lagarta near to Agia Efimia we live in.

Richmond Villa is in a lovely traditional village of Agia Irini. At the bottom of the road is a statue of Hercules and the Lion. You can see the Villa from the main road if you look up the hill and look to the right. The villa stands out as it is different to the traditional properties that surrounds it.

Richmond Villa is surrounded by mountains and natural beauty. The sky is a beautiful blue that looks too good to be true. No matter where you go in Kefalonia you are surrounded by beautiful colourful trees and plants. The colours are so bright and they have that WOW factor about them. We have planted lots of fruit trees but we are not expecting a good crop this year as it is the first year. Here are just a few pictures of our trees and plants that we have planted in the garden this year. It seems to be trial and error with the plants here in Greece mainly due to the heat. We have lost a lot of trees and plants and replaced them a few times.

Every morning we wake up to the sounds of the chirping of the birds and the Cicada singing from morning until night. It is the males that make the sounds and they are calling for the females. Then as everywhere around the villa starts to wake up, you hear the chickens and the Donkey. It is a dream come true living in Kefalonia.

The villa is a two storey property with the bedrooms on the ground floor and the Kitchen and lounge on the first floor. When you look out of the windows there is a glorious view of the mountains and the village below. From the bedrooms there are patio doors that open out onto a veranda where there is a table and chairs for you to relax in whilst drinking your morning coffee and looking out into the garden.

Upstairs from the lounge and dining area, there are also patio doors which lead to the large Balcony. On the balcony there is a corner sofa and a dining table for out door living. As you look out over the balcony you have a view of the mountains and the back garden. From here you can see the pool and the fruit trees. The villa has a lovely large garden that takes a lot of work to maintain Thankfully I am not the gardener, my husband is. He spends hours out in the garden when we have no guest and I am sure he over cleans the pool. If I cannot find him, I know he will be cleaning the pool.

The pool is an above ground pool. We chose this pool as the taxes are very high in Greece to have a pool plus we was advised that it can take up to 1 year to get a permit for a built in the ground pool. So we could not wait a year as we wanted to rent the Villa out for this summer and with a pool. The Greek people often say “ why do you need a pool when you are surrounded by beautiful beaches and the sea”. But when you are sunbathing in the garden and it is very hot you need to take a dip in the pool. The pool is 19ft x 11ft or just under. Its deep enough for a lovely swim and big enough for the whole family. The pool is a work in progress as we have great plans for it. We plan to add decking all around the pool which will be the same height as the pool and add palm trees and beautiful colourful trees.

Around the other side of the garden there is a BBQ, a large traditional BBQ. We put the BBQ in the front garden mainly for safety reasons.

Richmond Villa might not have been our first choice or second choice but we are glad we did buy it. The villa is lovely and relaxing, its comfortable and has everything you need to have a great holiday and to stay in a beautiful home.

We like to meet all of our guest and to welcome them into our home. When our guest come to the villa for the first time it is so lovely to hear their compliments and to see the smiles on their faces. From our many holidays in Greece before moving to Kefalonia we have staying in hotels, studios and villas. The one thing we noticed was that the accommodation was very basic. We wanted to change this and make our rental home that little bit more specials. In the villa there is everything you need to have a great holiday. We have toys for the pool and lilos . Sun loungers that fold up, so they can easily be moved around the villa gardens and also to take them to the beach. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, coffee machine, fridge freezer and oven and hob. The kitchen has everything that you need to prepare a lovely meal. We supply all towels including pool towels. The villa has two bathrooms, one downstairs and one upstairs. Both bathrooms are equipped with all the essentials including shower gel and hair shampoo. In the downstairs bathroom there is a corner bath and shower. In the bathroom is also a washing machine. The lounge has a large corner sofa which converts into a large double bed. With a pull of a handle the bed is easily assembled and disassembled.

From the time you step off the plane you will feel just how relaxing Kefalonia is. Whether it is your first time in Kefalonia I am sure it will not be your last. I often here from holiday makers that they visit the Island every year and have done so for many years.

This year the island has so far not been as busy as usual for the time of year or so I am told. I believe this has been due to the high cost of flights. We made the decision to reduce our villa rental charges and advertised our villa at a cheaper rate as this was the first year of rental. But when we saw how expensive the flights were for this year we decided to give a discount for all bookings that were made directly.

There is something special about Kefalonia and we want my family and friends to visit so that they too can experience just how wonderful it is to be living in Kefalonia. We gave up a lot to come to live here in Kefalonia but when things go wrong it is so much easier to brush yourself off and carry on because what better place could there be than in Kefalonia.
