Why Visit Kefalonia In Greece

Why You'd Want To Travel To Richmond Villa In Greece

We cannot believe we have lived on this beautiful Island of Kefalonia for nearly a year and a half.  We are still very much in love with Kefalonia as when we first came to visit. Our decision to move here took us by surprise. We came to the Island only once before we decided to move here. Crazy I know but we had had enough of having a mortgage and constant bills, so we sold up and moved to Kefalonia.

We started renting out Richmond Villa in the summer of 2024, so this will be our second season for renting out our villa. We have been extremely lucky to have guest rent our property who cared for the villa during their stay. We originally had concerns about renting the villa out , would there be a lot of damage ! instead we got fabulous guest and because of the great experience from 2024 we are going to continue to rent out Richmond villa. In fact we have our first guest in the villa already this year.

We have a lot of competition here in Kefalonia as there are many villa rentals and hotels. But with over 700 hundred thousand tourist to the Island in 2024, that gives the tourist a choice of accommodation that suits their needs. But I see so many people looking for a villa by the sea or a villa with a pool close to the sea and taverna’s. But to get the villa by the sea you will pay a premium price. So why not look a little further afield and pay around half the price. But unless you are looking to stay in one place for your whole holiday then you do need that villa by the sea with Tavernas. But why come all of the way to Kefalonia which is a 3 and a half hour flight from Gatwick Airport to Kefalonia just to visit the same beach or the same Taverna’s.

So a bit about Kefalonia that I have discovered so far! The Island of Kefalonia has 237Km of coastline, 39 sandy, peddle or gravel beaches. All over the Island there are Tavernas, stunning green scenery, mountains, traditional Greek villages and seaside towns and ports.  There are plenty of places to keep you busy . So why not hire a car and explore this beautiful Island because the sand and beaches you can go to any holiday destination to see. So be adventurous and take a drive to find the best beaches and the best places on the island which you cannot find if you remain in one area.

So what can people do when they are on holiday on the beautiful Island of Kefalonia?

  • Hire a boat, they are definitely worth the money. You go out on the boat without a guide. The boats are all in very good condition, you can follow the coastline and find some great beaches or places to jump off the boat and go for a swim. Take a picnic too. This is a really relaxing day out. We have use George’s boats in Poros. George is a lovely guy and very helpful. You will find George’s boat hire near the port in Poros.

  • Take a drive to the top of Mount Ainos, it is the tallest mountain on the Island , with an elevation of 1,628 metres which is about 5,341ft. The mountain is covered with Greek fir and black pine trees. Most of the mountain is designated as a National Park. On a clear day the views are great and you can see Zakynthos,

Lefkada and Ithaca.  The forest is the home for some semi wild horses.

  • Melissani lake which is in Sami, it is a cave with underground lake . On a lovely sunny day the sun shines down on the lake and you can take a short boat trip around the lake and see the crystal blue water. The children will love it. The guides singing is not great but he is doing his best.

  • Drogarati cave, they are definitely worth seeing. Again these caves are just outside of Sami. You can usually buy tickets for both the Melissani lakes and Drogarati caves from a kiosk just outside. It’s a lot of steps to get down to the cave as it is 60 metres below ground. So not any good if you have a walking disability. But if you can get down and of course back up then it’s definitely worth the steps. It’s lovely and cool down there too.  Its nature at its best, with Stalactites and Stalagmites. Apparently the cave is over 100 million years old. Outside the caves you have a couple of restaurants and shops. One of the restaurants have a great pool. So while you order your food you can cool down in the pool.

  • Assos is a seaside village , extremely beautiful and great for a day trip. Lovely Tavernas, stunning views and crystal clear waters. I like to visit Assos but there would not be enough to entertain me if I was staying there for a week. It’s great for a day trip.

  • Fiskardo again very beautiful and it has a port. You can take a trip to Ithaca from this port.

  • Beaches, drive around the Island and you will come across some lovely beaches. The great thing about the beaches in Kefalonia is that there are 39, so they are never over busy. We live in Agia Irini which is a short drive to Poros Port and beach. It takes about 8 minutes by car. Poros is a Port so you can get a ferry to Athens from there or go on a boat trip which takes you around the Island or even hire a small boat for you and your family. The beach is very long and at the far end of the beach  hidden behind the cliff is a man who paints the rocks and makes statues using the rock. The water is warm and crystal blue. The area has several food markets, a clothing shop, Taverna’s, bakery, chemist, a very good hairdressers and gift shops. But what I love there the most is the Zanza bar. Everyone is made to feel welcome and the cocktails are good too.

It is a traditional port town with all that you need in one place. The beach is a white peddle beach and swimming is great.
